Delmarva Today 6-10-22

May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old, (we won’t say his name), entered the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and with an assault rifle fatally shot nineteen students - children really -, and two teachers, and wounded seventeen other people.  Earlier in the day, he shot his grandmother in the forehead at home, severely wounding her.

Harold’s guest is Sarah Hidalgo-Cook and they talk about the recent shooting of the school children and teachers in Uvalde, Texas. Sarah also reads her article “A letter from Uvalde, Texas” published in the Greene County Democrat in Alabama, and discusses her experience of the tragedy – how it has changed the town and how it has changed her. Sarah is a lifelong resident of Uvalde.  Following is the last paragraph of her “Letter from Uvalde, Texas:

“Not in my town. Not in my elementary school. Not to my people.” That is what my heart is telling me. I know that we are in for years of anguish. This is a wake-up call for our community and other rural communities everywhere. When the media is gone and we are left alone to face this nightmare, we will need to lean on each other more than ever. We will need to lean on our faith in God. Uvaldeans are my people. This is my home. We have always been resilient, but we will never, ever be the same."

Sarah reads her “Letter” and discuss how life is different today in Uvalde, Texas.
