Delmarva Today offers a literary discussion with these two writers that focuses on their conception of literature, the literary influences on their work, and their suggestions for other writers.
Harold Wilson’s guests are Eastern Shore writers Barbara Shamp and David Salner. Salner is an accomplished poet with four poetry collections and poetry published in a number of literary journals including three editions of The Delmarva Review. He has received numerous poetry prizes and awards and his work has been read by Garrison Keillor on Writer’s Almanac. A Place to Hide is David Salner’s first novel. It recently won first place in the 2022 Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the historical fiction category.
Barbara Shamp, is the author of A Wife in Watercolor. This historical novel is Shamp’s second novel. It focuses on two women, Sarah Wise and Yearie who play a significant role in the life of Robert Morse, Sr. and life in Oxford, Maryland in 1747. In the Author’s Note, Barbara Shamp goes on to say that, The record of women in Western history is sparse. From the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries very little is written by women, about women, and nearly nothing about women of the lower classes. For me, Sarah’s story needed to be imagined.
