Delmarva Today: 2-19-21
Harold Wilson’s guest is Dr. Michael Murphy, emergency medical physician at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD. Mike is a frequent guest on Delmarva Today and Harold has asked him to update us on the status of the pandemic in our area here on the Eastern Shore, and review recovery prospects for the future.
We are a year now into the global COVID-19 pandemic. Looking back, it has been an incredibly tumultuous 12 months. In the midst of the pandemic that has taken more than 480,000 lives here in the US, caused a lockdown that has dislocated the education process, significantly disrupted the main-street economy, and caused undue economic, psychological, and physical stress on the population, we have also experienced a Presidential election in which one of the candidates refuses to recognize its legitimacy, and prompted a seditious mob attack on an official congressional session.
It’s actually amazing that in the midst of this turmoil and dislocation we have managed to create an effective vaccine through a process that normally takes years and begun its distribution around the globe. In addition there are recovery plans in the offering that instill confidence and at this time hospitalizations and deaths due to the virus appear to be declining. We also appear to be dealing creatively with the new variants of the virus that continue to emerge and disappear.
